Golfing Every Day Challenge Day 7: Overcoming Obstacles by Adapting & Evolving
1. Why I’m Shifting My Focus: The Importance of a Balanced Life
Last year, I made the bold decision to put golf on the back burner and dive headfirst into coding. While I don’t regret this choice, I’ve come to realize how crucial it is to live a more balanced lifestyle. Looking back, I was the happiest I’ve ever been in my WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE during the fall of last year. My routine consisted of outdoor exercise, coding, healthy eating, and meeting my coding friends once a week. I felt a deep sense of fulfillment and peace, something I want to recapture.
The challenge I’m facing now is that coding has become such a passion for me that I want to do it for 10 hours a day or more if possible. The thrill of creating something from scratch, solving problems, and knowing that I’m building tools for myself is incredibly rewarding. It gives me a high that’s hard to put into words. For the first time, I’m creating for ME, and that’s something I’ve never fully experienced before. While I do aspire to work on projects for others eventually, my current focus is on my personal growth through coding.
That said, my Golf Every Day challenge needs to evolve. Golfing is still important to me, but my main priority right now is coding. I want to integrate more balance into my life by giving time to other activities that also bring me joy and peace.
2. The Challenge of Balancing Passion with Daily Responsibilities
Even though my desire to code for 10 hours a day is strong, I’ve realized it’s not always practical to dedicate another 3 hours daily to content creation and social media posting. As a one-woman team, I’m juggling a variety of essential tasks that keep my life running smoothly, including meal prepping, grocery shopping, cleaning, work, laundry, gym time, leisure, etc etc.
These daily responsibilities can quickly add up, and I’ve come to understand that it’s crucial to prioritize what truly brings me happiness and helps me thrive. Right now, coding is my primary passion, but I also need to balance it with self-care and other important aspects of my life.
By honing in on the activities that bring me the most fulfillment and productivity, I can ensure I’m not just busy, but thriving in all areas of my life. It’s all about creating a sustainable routine that allows me to focus on what matters most—without burning out.
3. Why I Don’t Thrive in the Influencer Lifestyle
I’ve realized that the influencer lifestyle isn’t for me. I don’t crave a lot of attention, and I thrive in solitude. Becoming an influencer can feel incredibly challenging. It requires constantly coming up with ideas, creating and editing videos, taking and editing photos, uploading content, blogging, managing posts across multiple social media platforms, analyzing the views & likes, and staying on top of comments and direct messages. It’s almost like having a full-time job. While I admire the idea of influencing, my true passion lies in coding, which I find far more fulfilling and enjoyable.
4. Working With Others
While I value a few close friendships, I find that I feel most at peace when I’m working alone or spending time with a small circle. Hanging out with friends once a week feels like the perfect amount of socializing, especially when I can combine it with collaborative coding projects. These projects allow me to be productive while also connecting with others who share my passion for coding.
I appreciate constructive criticism and feedback from those who inspire me. I’m always eager to grow and improve, and I value the opportunity to learn from others. Some of the best coders I’ve met are not only talented but also kind, helpful, hardworking, inspiring, and genuinely excited about code. I’ve attended several coding meetups, and the atmosphere there is always one of collaboration and encouragement. It’s a space where we all push each other to do better, and that’s something I deeply appreciate.
5. Striving for Balance: My Journey to a Healthier Lifestyle
Despite my love for coding, I sometimes struggle with feeling “not good enough,” which only fuels my desire to code and improve my life even more. Coding is a constant challenge, and I can’t seem to get enough of it. But I’ve learned that sitting at my desk for hours on end isn’t good for my physical health. This is why I’m now focused on creating a routine that balances my love for coding with other important aspects of my life, like golf, the gym, eating healthy, and socializing—just a little bit!
Last year, towards the end, I got a bit sidetracked and found myself in a bad position. However, after self-reflection and isolation, I’m clearer on what I want out of life. My goal is to build a balanced routine that allows me to be even happier than I was last fall. By creating this balance, I know I can improve my productivity, health, and overall happiness. It’s about finding that sweet spot (like in golf), where I can still focus on my passion for coding, while also living a well-rounded, fulfilling life.
